FAQ's about the New Library
Q. Why do we need a new library?
A. The existing library was built in 1927 to serve a population of 2,300 people and 400 library cardholders. Today there are over 12,000 cardholders and the library serves a community of over 21,900 people. The library’s collection includes 50,000 items – less than half the number recommended for a community our size. Use of library material continues to increase and this year it has been the highest ever. See our 2006 Annual Report for more details on library use. The current facility has just 3 computers with Internet access and 3 with databases. It has limited seating for adults and children, and offers limited accessibility to disabled visitors. Only three parking spaces are available to library patrons and one is for handicapped use only.
Q. Will a new library mean additional staff?
A. Yes, three full time positions will be added. The library currently has 10 full time employees and 8 part time employees.
Q. Where will the new library be built?
A. The new library will be built on 2.2 acres in the Village of Warwick on McFarland Drive, off of Forester Avenue. The land is a gift to the library and all residents from Leyland Alliance, the developers of Warwick Grove. The new building and grounds will provide ample parking for library users.
Q. What about the existing building?
A. The existing building will be sold and proceeds will be used to pay down the bond for the new Library. The existing building is in a protected historic area so will meet very strict requirements for new uses.
Q. Is there any private fundraising going on?
A. The Albert Wisner Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library, as well as grants, have already raised over $200,000 toward the new library. The land, valued at over $300,000 has been donated by Leyland Alliance and the Foundation is planning an extensive Capital Campaign, Expanding Possibilities, to raise additional funds.
Q. What will be some of the benefits of the new library?
A. A separate children’s room with program area totaling 4,000 square feet or more than 4 times our space today. Quiet study and reading areas with comfortable seating. A flexible multipurpose room to be used for programs and community meetings as well as group study space. A Warwick Room to store and provide use of the area’s historical collections. Full access for people with handicaps and disabilities, including parking for 60 cars. Sustainable, energy-efficient green technology design including geothermal heating.
