Trent Schroyerwill discuss his book "Beyond Western Economics". The book argues that modern western economic culture emerges from a particular cultural history and that it is neither a globally universalizable or a sustainable culture. After the 'great recession', the ongoing dominance of Wall Street, and corporate monopolies over market systems, the down sides of this culture are becoming all too real in the west. Re-embedding markets within local/regional contexts so that they have an immediate reality to participants as social realities of producing and distributing surplus exists in many forms and places. A survey of alternative practices documents that we have many more options than are now recognized by the dominat types of western economics and opens up the possibility that spiritual traditions and movements can become catalyses for economic cultural transformation.
