Join us for this six-session program where 9 and 11 year-olds and their parents get together to talk about books and ideas. Books, snacks and activities for younger siblings are all provided at each session. We will be focusing on three themes: (2 books for each theme) Being American, Courage and Freedom. Three picture books and three novels will be read. The picture books are La Mariposa, Martin's Big Words and the Girl Who Loved Wild Horses. The novels are Letters from Rifka, Shiloh, and The Friendship. Books will be loaned to each child and adult that registers. In order to ensure a successful program, attendance at all six sessions is required.
Ages 4-10. Drop in to build a Lego creation that will be displayed at the library.
Henrietta Lacks was a poor African-American migrant from the tobacco farms of Virginia who died in 1951 of cancer at the age of 30. A sample of her cancerous tissue, taken without her knowledge -- as was the custom then -- turned out to provide scientists one of the most important tools in medicine. Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, the story of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences.
Rated PG. 119 min.
