Meet artist Jan Gray in the Gallery Area on the Lower Level. Her exhibit of handpainted tiles is on display in the display cases on the Lower Level of the Library. Refreshments will be served.
Artist statement: After attending a Pinterest class using alcohol ink to create small tile coasters at the Albert Wisner Public Library, I was inspired to apply the techniques to larger works on ceramic tile and clear glass. My pieces reflect observations gleaned from fellow artists and online resources. The process includes selection of various painting implements, including brushes, felt pads, straws, alcohol pads, and cotton swabs. After the blending and layering of various ink colors, each piece receives multiple coats of kamar varnish to protect the image. In addition to working with alcohol ink, other artistic endeavors include decorative painting with acrylics on various metal and wood objects, refinishing furniture, paper folding, crocheting, and painting house portraits. Creative art projects, such as tessellation t-shirts and geodesic ornaments, have been incorporated into mathematics lessons which I have taught at the secondary and college levels for over three decades.
