In October 2016, on the eve of Yom Kippur -- the holiest, most solemn day of the Jewish calendar -- a cemetery belonging to Temple Beth Shalom of Florida, NY was desecrated with vile, anti-Semitic iconographic symbology. Michael Melasky tells the story of this event, its immediate and long-term aftermath and the enormous effect it had on the entire community. The presentation leads to a broad-based conversation on hate speech, offering proactive strategies on how to deal with this behavior.

Local author and blog celebrity Peggy Gavan launches her new book of stories about cats and their place in the history of New York City. The 19th century was a tough time to be a stray cat in New York, but some lucky strays were adopted by men of all walks of life and became feline celebrities. The author's blog, The Hatching Cat, has been featured in Newsweek magazine and in The New York Times. Copies of The Cat Men of Gotham: Tales of Feline Friendships in Old New York will be available for purchase and signing.
