Join us as we are transported to the time of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of one man -- Judy Cook's great-great-grandfather Gilbert Claflin -- and revealed through the letters he exchanged with his wife, Esther. You will see photos of the day and the letters themselves. Judy, in costume, will read the letters, play the tunes and sing the songs of this era, providing the audience with a fascinating glimpse into home life in Middle America during the 1860s.

“….Mr. Strycker has the ability to write about the worlds of man and fowl without simplifying either…. He thinks like a biologist but writes like a poet, and one of the small pleasures of "The Thing With Feathers" is watching him distill empirical research into lyrical imagery….Mr. Strycker's primary contribution to this topic is to remind us that in the world of ornithology, despite any similarities between humans and their winged companions, people remain the oddest birds of all.”
